JAMAL “The Suit” PATTERSON

As a Renzo Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Jamal “The Suit” Patterson is one of the top up-and-coming prospects in MMA’s light heavyweight division. Patterson earned his nickname from his day job as a salesman for a high-profile dental company, although he never lets his time as a “suit” get into the way of his prowess inside the cage.

All seven of Patterson’s fights have come against top-flight competition, making his 5-2 record even more impressive. During his time in the IFL, Patterson stepped in with UFC veterans Vladimir Matyushenko and Reese Andy, and he also earned victories over UFC veteran Matt Horwich, former TUF competitor Alex Schoenauer, and Chris Baten. Since his time in the IFL, “The Suit” has also earned a 44-second submission victory over Shine and Strikeforce veteran Antwain Britt.

Patterson is more than just a great grappling practitioner, however. Despite training under jiu-jitsu legend Gracie and having all five of his professional victories coming by way of submission, Patterson excelled as an All-American wrestler and football player at Colgate University before his fighting career took off.

Having been featured in Sports Illustrated as one of its “Faces in the Crowd” as a youth and then being profiled in The New York Times for his prowess in both business and fighting, Patterson embodies the balance between Corporate America and his status as one of the sport’s elite athletes. He is a unique fighter, and looks to show his skills in Shine in 2010.
